Baku-APA. European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has expressed his deep concerns about the current political events in Romania regarding the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, the president’s office said on Thursday in a statement, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

In a meeting with Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta, Van Rompuy underlined that he had been closely following the events in the country.

The rule of law and the independence of the judiciary are "fundamental principles on which the European Union is based and which are natural for all governments to respect," according to the statement.

As Ponta came to Brussels to explain the efforts of his government to expel its current President Traian Basescu in a power struggle, Van Rompuy encouraged him to "engage in a constructive dialogue with the European Commission and to address the issues identified by the Commission as problematic," the statement said.

The two also exchanged views on the economic situation in the EU, it said.
