Baku-APA. The police were on high alert for Sunday’s elections for local authorities in Cyprus, the country’s media reported on Saturday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Police Spokesman Michalis Katsounotos was quoted by semi-government Cyprus News Agency as saying that a total of 2,175 police officers will be on duty Sunday.

Katsounotos explained that they will be stationed at all polling stations across the country and they will take security precautions where the ballot boxes will be placed right after the counting process.

Katsounotos also said that as of midnight Friday, the police had been checking whether there has been any violation of the electoral legislation regarding posters and political gatherings, adding that so far, no such violation has been reported.

Municipal elections take place every five years in December. Voters will vote for mayors as well as members of the town councils.
