Baku-APA. French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned Thursday of a possible explosion of the European bloc unless decisive measures can be taken in the coming weeks, APA reports.

"Never has Europe been so necessary and never has Europe been in so much danger...Never has the risk of Europe’s explosion been so great," Sarkozy said at a congress of the conservative European People’s Party in Marseille, southern France.

"There will not be a second chance for the eurozone if the European Council will not take decision on the necessary reforms," he added.

Hours before a crunch European Union summit in Brussels, the French leader called on his European partners to have a "spirit of compromise" and urged them to take quick moves to solve the debt crisis.

"We have few weeks to decide. We have to decide immediately. More we delay the decision, more it will be expensive and less effective," Sarkozy stressed.

Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel unveiled an anti-crisis plan based on reforms to change European treaty in a way to tighten control of budget gaps by imposing automatic sanctions on members missing their deficit targets.

The Franco-German plan is due to be discussed during the European Council meeting opened in Brussels later on Thursday.
