Baku – APA. Estonian President Toomas Hendrick Ilves is being sworn in today for his second term as the country’s head of state, APA reports with reference to DELFI agency. The Estonian president serves 5 year terms.
Estonia is a parliamentary republic and the president elected by the members of the parliament has representing functions.
Ilves easily won the August 29 election in parliament, with 73 votes in favor. He needed 68 votes to win the election in the first round.
Ilves was born in Stockholm to the family of Estonian immigrants. His family moved to the United States. The future president was working for Radio Free Europe. He was Estonian ambassadors to some countries and led the Estonian foreign ministry early 1990s.
