Baku-APA. The French Foreign Ministry said Saturday that’s Cote d’Ivoire’s hanging-on president Laurent Gbagbo’ decision to terminate the accreditation of French ambassador to Abidjan was null and void, APA reports quoting Xinhua News Agency.

"The statement of Mr. Laurent Gbagbo regarding the Ambassador of France, Jean-Marc Simon, is regarded by the French Republic as null and void and without legal effect," the ministry said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, the government of Gbagbo, who refused to step down after the presidential run-off at the end of 2010, said it has "terminated the accreditation" of French ambassador Simon.

The French Foreign Ministry repeated that it only respects the authority of president-elect Alassane Ouattara.

Gbagbo’s move to deprive French ambassador’s legitimacy followed a verbal note from the French Foreign Ministry saying it had accredited the Ivorian Ambassador to France designated by Ouattara.

British and Canadian ambassadors in Cote d’Ivoire had been deported in early January by the Gbagbo government for similar reasons.
