Baku – APA. Belgian Prime Minister Herman van Rompuy was elected the frst president of the European Union at the extraordinary summit of EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday, APA reports. Rompuy was nominated by Sweden, which takes EU presidency currently. Former Latvian president Vaira Vike-Freiberga and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair were also among the candidates to the post of EU president. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was actively lobbying the Blair’s candidacy, but at the last moment Downing Street abandoned its plans because of former prime minister’s low rating. Sweden nominated EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton to the post of EU foreign policy chief and she was supported by other member countries.
