Series of events are held in Berlin on the occasion of 20 years anniversary of demolishing Berlin Wall and opening the borders between West and East Germany, APA correspondent reports from Berlin. Before the celebrations, about 1,000 giant dominos will topple along the former path of the Berlin wall, which divided the city one time.
The dominos, 2.5 meters high, one meter width and 40 cm thickness have been illustrated by schoolchildren and students under the patronage of different public unions and with the help of artists. Stretching 1.5 kilometers from Potsdamer Platz to the Reichstag, the parliament building, the symbolic wall will be demolished at the ceremony attended by EU leaders. 12 giant monitors were installed in the central squares of the city for watching the ceremony.
Former Polish president Lech Walesa, chairman of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barrozo and president of the European parliament Jerzy Buzek wil, demolish dominoes at 8.00 pm by local time.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel German, Presidents Horst Kohler of Germany, Nicolas Sarkozy of France, Dmitriy Medvedev of Russia, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, former presidents of USSR, Poland and Hungary Mikhail Gorbachev, Lech Walesa and Miklos Nemeth will attend the celebrations.
The Berlin Wall was erected in 1961 by the German Democratic Republic to prevent emigration of East Germans to the West. It divided the city to two parts encircling the city of West Berlin completely separating it from East Germany. But 100-km wall couldnâ€™t stop the people who tried to escape to the West Germany. Nearly 200 people could escape, nearly 200 were injured and 3000 arrested. The Berlin Wall was demolished in 1989 and some parts of the wall were saved as a monument.
