Strasbourg. Fouad Gulubeyli – APA. PACE political party groups will hold hearing on the election of Council of Europe Secretary General involving of both candidates, members of the European People’s Party said at a press conference, APA correspondent reports. The European People’s Party considers that the candidates nominated by the Committee of Ministers are not suitable ideologically for the fair elections, because both are socialists. Despite that former Polish Prime Minister Vlodzimej Tymochevich is a member of the European People’s Party. He was nominated as a candidate of socialist group. Other candidate is Norwegian socialist Tjorborn Jagland. The European People’s Party nominated Belgian Luke van den Brande as its candidate.

Member of the European People’s Party group Christos Purgurides said the Committee of Ministers violated rules of election of the Secretary General. “All PACE members accepted that. They consider that there is no other choice. We agree to hold elections in January with correction of these violations. If there are rules, they must be observed. But most parliamentarians try to show pragmatism voting for the elections”.

The European People’s Party was rejected in its demand to withdraw the election issue from the plenary agenda.
