Baku -APA. Italy is not opposed to the Nabucco gas pipeline project, said the country’s foreign minister told a newspaper.
“At the same time, we are involved in the South Stream pipeline from Turkey to Italy via Greece...,” Franco Frattini told La Stampa newspaper in an interview.
Meanwhile, Russian media misquoted Italian minister as saying his country is against the Nabucco pipeline. The original text of interview in Italian can be found at http://www.lastampa.it/redazione/cmsSezioni/esteri/200908articoli/46511girata.asp
Italy is the only Group of Eight (G8) industrialised nation without nuclear power and relies on oil and gas imports for about 80 percent of its energy needs.
The South Stream pipeline will bring Russian gas under the Black Sea to south-eastern Europe and is a venture between Italian oil group Eni and Russia’s.
Nabucco is backed by the European Union and will transport Caspian gas to central Europe.
