IAEA elects new director today

Baku â€“APA. The board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency will vote on Thursday on the new head of the agency, APA reports. Yukiya Amano (Japan), Abdulsamad Minti (South Africa) and Luis Ecchavarri (Spain) are among the candidates for the post of IAEA Director General. According to the IAEA charter, the candidates need to win votes of at least two third of the board of governors. 35 countries are represented in the board of governors. No one of the candidates could gain necessary votes at the last month election. Yukiya Amano won 20, Abdulsamad Minti â€“ 11 and Luis Ecchavarri 4 votes. Slovenian and Belgian candidates dropped out of the race after the first election. Theoretically the board of governors has to submit the name of the candidate for the post of Director General to the IAEA General Conference in Vienna on September 14-18, 2009. IAEA incumbent Director General Mohamed El Baradei will step down in November, 2009.
