Turkey recalls its ambassador to Canada

The demarche was made as government representatives of Canada participated in the commemorative event on the so-called Armenian genocide. The event was organized on the 5th anniversary of the recognition of the “Armenian genocide†by Canada. Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper did not attend the event personally, but sent a letter. Official Ankara ran out of patience as despite Turkey’s warnings and historical evidence, the government of Canada still recognized 1915 events as genocide. Ambassador Rafet Akgunay was immediately called to Ankara for consultations. The diplomatic translation of this step actually means freezing of the diplomatic relations.
