Wind speed measurements are currently being conducted in designated sea areas using LiDAR technology as part of the "Study of Offshore Wind Energy Potential and Preparatory Measures for Its Utilization" project, APA reports citing the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency (AREA).

These activities are outlined in the Strategy of Socio-Economic Development of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2022–2026,.

"Two LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) units, delivered by the Finnish Vaisala company, have been installed in the designated area. These units will conduct laser measurements of wind speed and direction at specified points up to 10 kilometers away," AREA said.

The LiDAR device can measure wind speed at heights of 75 meters, 150 meters, and 225 meters, effectively creating virtual measurement and observation points. Azerbaijani specialists and AREA employees received training on using this equipment, including its operation principles, ground installation, adjustment, and real-time data analysis. Participants were awarded certificates upon completing the training.

To note, the World Bank estimates Azerbaijan's offshore wind energy potential at 157 GW. The planned construction of wind farms on the Caspian shelf aims to harness this potential, providing green energy for export to Europe.
