UK energy minister: Azerbaijan is a leading country in the region

Baku. Rashad Suleymanov - APA-ECONOMICS. The Gas Infrastructure World Caspian-2009 is in progress for the second day in Azerbaijan.

There have been several important speeches at the beginning of the second day.

UK energy minister Lord Hunt said that his country views Azerbaijan as its close partner in the energy sector.

He added that British companies are active in the energy sector in the region and make large investments around there. The minister expressed his countryâ€™s backing for the diversification of energy routes.

"Azerbaijan is a leading country in this region. Azerbaijan was the first country to join the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, and also plays a role in the involvement of other countries in this initiative", he added.

Then, ADBâ€™s Country Director of Kazakhstan Stephen Wermert spoke about ongoing energy projects in the region, efficiency and funding opportunities, as well as ADB’s role in these projects.

The two-day event will be wrapped up today.
