NATO can take part in protecting pipelines in the South Caucasus

Baku. Rashad Suleymanov - APA-Economics. NATO can take part in protecting export pipelines in the South Caucasus, said Michael Gaul, head of the NATO Directorate of Defence and Economic Security.

According to him, export pipelines are not being protected through the national capacity and each country is protecting the pipeline on its territory.

However, if requested, NATO can take part in the protection of pipelines in the region, he noted.

Gaul also said that energy security was highlighted at the last NATO summit in April and the alliance was working on building cooperation with member cstates and partners in the field of energy security

NATO intends to exchange views with Azerbaijan which plays an important role in energy supply and energy security of Europe, he noted.

According him, NATO supports the proposed Nabucco project as an alternative route for gas delivery to Europe.
