CIS Electric Power Council meets in Baku

Baku. Rashad Suleymanov - APA-Economics. The 35th meeting of the CIS Electric Power Council has kicked off in Baku, bringing together representatives of the relevant bodies of Azerbaijan, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Moldova, as well as a delegation from Iran.

Azerbaijani Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev briefed the participants about major projects in his country’s energy sector over the recent years.

According to him, Azerbaijan has been exporting electricity to neighbouring states for 2 years.

”In the near future Azerbaijan will increase electricity output to 10 000 MW by building new power plants and upgrading existing plants,” he added.


Mentioning the construction of a high-power transmission line between Russia and Azerbaijan, he underlined the importance of the Caspian annular power network system.

Russian Minister of Energy Sergei Shmatko said that the meeting will discuss the performance of the CIS power systems in 2008-2009, implementation of the agreement on the parallel operation of power systems, development of action plans for projects within the scope of the CIS Electricity Cooperation Concept etc.

The CIS Electric Power Council was established in 1992.
