Major General Andrei Volkov, commander of the Russian military contingent temporarily stationed on Azerbaijani territory, stated a few days ago that the peacekeepers' activities were deliberately discredited. It's wondering what Mr. Volkov meant when he said "activities of peacekeepers."
It has long been known that Russian military personnel in Karabakh are unable or unwilling to carry out the duties assigned to them. A clear example of this was the performance put on by local and non-local Armenians during Azerbaijani ecologists' visit to the region today.
Imagine that, after days of negotiations with the command of peacekeepers, Azerbaijani ecologists arrive in the region to monitor the mines on Azerbaijani territory. As they arrive at the mines, they are confronted by an "angry" crowd that has been trained in advance and is said to be Karabakh Armenians. Although this crowd obstructs ecologists' civil activities, peacekeepers do not interfere with them, unlike Azerbaijani journalists, and actively put Azerbaijani experts in a position where they would face more unpleasant provocations. "Suddenly" Armenian oligarch Ruben Vardanyan appears. This person, who has been sent from Moscow to Khankendi on a specific task, introduces himself to environmentalists as a "minister" and claims to be able to "resolve" the situation. Naturally, our environmentalists let him go, reminding him that he is not a "minister" and lacks a legitimate status to be addressed. Thus, another fraud of separatists, who have never been a party to the discussion during the 30-year conflict, is wasted.
However, it is possible to draw some conclusions from what happened. First of all, it is likely that this unfortunate scenario of legitimizing Vardanyan's role as the blind caliph of Baghdad was pre-planned with the Russian peacekeeping contingent. Probably, the actors, main, and bit-part roles of this play were determined together. Because Azerbaijani ecologists visited two mines and observed the same scenario in both.
The second important consequence is that the Russian peacekeepers still do not want to fulfill the agreements reached with Azerbaijan. They are irresponsible to the agreements reached on ensuring the safety of our civilians in the region. Dozens of such provocations against Azerbaijani soldiers and citizens occurred after Russian peacekeepers were temporarily stationed in Karabakh, and the command either stood by silently or made a biased statement.
In this respect, the above-mentioned question can be asked again: what did General Volkov mean by activities? Why do Russian peacekeepers so persistently cast a shadow on their reputation and intentions?
