Proposal to reconsider Nakhchivan’s autonomous status raised in Milli Majlis

"The removal of references to the Moscow and Kars treaties from the preamble of the Constitution of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is a very positive step," said Gudrat Hasanguliyev, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defense, Security and Counter-Corruption, during today’s session of the Milli Majlis, while discussing the draft Constitutional Law "On approving amendments to the Constitution of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic", APA reports.

Hasanguliyev called for broader public discussions on the autonomous status of Nakhchivan: “The wider public should start debating whether there is still a need to maintain Nakhchivan as an autonomous republic. Nakhchivan is a small region. In the past, its autonomy could be somewhat justified. But now, a direct route is being built via Iran, and soon a road through Zangezur will also be opened. According to our Constitution, Azerbaijan is a unitary state. From this perspective, we need to consider the issue of abolishing Nakhchivan’s autonomy.

Such changes should follow amendments to the Constitution of Azerbaijan. We are amending Nakhchivan’s Constitution while the related provisions in the national Constitution remain unchanged. I believe the changes to Nakhchivan’s Constitution should have come after adjustments to the national Constitution.”

MP Elman Nasirov noted that the issue of autonomy is not the subject of this draft: “This draft includes two newly added specific articles and numerous amendments. It opens new perspectives for strengthening Azerbaijan as a unitary state.”

Meanwhile, MP Eldar Ibrahimov stated that Nakhchivan’s autonomous status should be maintained for the time being.
