Azerbaijanis residing in Urmia hold protest action
# 25 April 2008 09:14 (UTC +04:00)
Chairman of Research and Information Center of South Azerbaijan Independence Party Sadif Isabeyli told APA that the organization had held a number of events to support Azerbaijani candidates in the recent parliamentary elections in Iran. The union also called on the people not to vote for non-Azerbaijanis, mainly for Kurdish candidates recently settled in the region. After non-Azerbaijani was elected from Urmia, the union started propaganda calling to boycott the government’s decisions. Isabeyli said that the union was banned to hold an event of Azerbaijani music and poems on April 23. The Azerbaijanis, who had gathered in the assembly hall of the union, started rally in Mafi Street of Urmia. “I am Turk!”, “Long live Azerbaijan!” and other slogans were chanted at the protest action. The police dispersed the action and no information was given about the detainees. The union’s activity was suspended after the law-enforcement bodies searched its office.
