GUAM conference to adopt advices on conflict solutions
Latvian Deputy Foreign Minister Edgards Skuya said that the conflicts in GUAM territory threatened security in entire Europe. He thinks the European Commission has great opportunities for the solution of the conflicts within the European Neighborhood Policy. Edgards Skuya urged to strengthen economic and legal reforms for the realization of these opportunities and said that prolonged conflicts delayed future development. Latvian diplomat said these conflicts would be solved within the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty of the countries.
Deputy Foreign Minister of Lithuania Jaroslav Neverovic called GUAM as a good area for cooperation. The Deputy Minister underlined that Lithuania attached great importance to the regional cooperation and the cooperation of three Baltic States gave impetus to their integration into Europe and said their main goal was to improve democracy towards East.
“Lithuania supports territorial integrity of South Caucasus republicsâ€, Jaroslav Neverovic said.
He said his country would chair OSCE the next year and pay special attention to the settlement of the conflicts.
Deputy State Secretary of Foreign Ministry of Switzerland Pyer Helo spoke about his country’s experience in the solution of conflicts. He noted the importance of solving the conflicts within the framework of the territorial integrity.
Director General for Policy Planning and Multilateral Political Relations of Slovenian Foreign Ministry Anita Pipan said Slovenia was chairing European Union and the solution of conflicts was one of the priorities. She considers that in order to solve conflicts, compromises should be achieved through constructive political dialogue and negotiations.
Gheorghe Magheru, Director General for Europe of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Romania, said conflicts posed great threat to the regional security.
“Nagorno Karabakh conflict is different and that’s why it requires a different way of solutionâ€, he said.
He said that separatist regimes should not be recognized and illegal military forces should be disarmed.
Former Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan, President of the Eurasian Strategic Studies Center (ASAM) Osman Faruk Logoglu announced that internationally recognized state sovereignty, territorial integrity and borders should be respected during the solution of the conflicts. He stated that prolonging the time impeded the settlement of the conflicts and international community gave little attention to the settlement of the conflicts.
“OSCE MG Group’s mediation delays the solution to the issue. Prospects of solution the conflicts lowers radicalism increases and other separatist groups begin to use Kosovo experiment. The solution of the conflict should be carried out within the framework of the UN. If regional organizations, as well as GUAM support the settlement of the conflicts, then we can achieve successâ€, he said. The conference continues.
