APA reports the Special Representative’s visit to Azerbaijan has two main goals: “One of the main aims of my visit is to conduct discussions with an official Baku regarding the implementation of the second phase of the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) signed between Azerbaijan and NATO and attend the 68th Rose-Roth Seminar of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. The Second phase of IPAP was confirmed in Brussels yesterday” said NATO’s first ever Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia Robert Simmons. According to him, he has had meetings with Azerbaijani President, Foreign and Defence Ministers. “During the meeting with the head of state, we conducted an exchange of views on the issues of primary importance to be discussed at Bucharest summit on April 2-4” said R. Simmons. Moreover, NATO-Azerbaijan relations and future development of bilateral cooperation were in the focus of attention at the meetings with Azerbaijani officials. Mr. Simmons stressed that the first phase of IPAP had already ended. To him, the IPAP second phase envisages the further expansion of NATO’s relations with Azerbaijani Ministries of Internal Affairs, National Security, Emergency Situations and State Border Service. Expressing his satisfaction with NATO-Azerbaijan relations, R. Simmons stated that the next round of negotiations between ANAMA and NATO’s Trust Fund would be conducted in June of the current year. Touching upon Azerbaijan’s membership perspectives to NATO, the organization’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia noted that official Baku had not voiced such intention yet. “If Azerbaijan voices such intention, we will work on that issue” he said.
