A roundtable on 21 February-International Mother Language Day was held at the initiative of UN Office in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan National Commission for UNESCO and Azerbaijan Ataturk Center, APA reports.
UN Office department Chief Envera Selimovich stated that Languages Research Center in London reports that one language dies per month. Gradually people prefer their children to learn generally spoken languages. She stressed that minorities living in Azerbaijan have no language problems.
“Azerbaijan is an exemplary place where various nations speak their native languages. I approve this equality of languages in Azerbaijan�, she said.
Chief of National Commission for UNESCO Fuad Isgenderov spoke about the activities in 2006. He also pointed that nations living in Azerbaijan don’t face any problems concerning their mother tongue. Azerbaijan Ataturk Center president Nizami Jafarov mentioned that Azeri government has relevant laws on mother tongue study.
Ombudsman Elmira Suleynova also said no ban had been imposed on minorities to speak their native languages. /APA/
