Former advisor of Dagestan’s President Said Gurbanov dies in Baku

On March 11 Gurbanov was brought to Baku and hospitalized with diagnosis of heart failure. Despite doctors’ efforts, Said Gurbanov died in the resuscitation department of the hospital yesterday. Dagestan’s representation in Azerbaijan told APA that Said Gurbanov will be buried in Salik village of Dagestan’s Derbent region today. Under the order issued by President Ilham Aliyev in December last year, Said Gurbanov was awarded “Shohrat” (Glory) order.

Azerbaijani Said Jamal Gurbanov was born in Salik village of Derbent on December 21, 1928. Said Gurbanov had held higher posts for long years. In 1965 he was elected chairman of Derbent executive Committee and in 1966 he elected first secretary of Derbent party committee. Said Gurbanov took the post of the minister of agriculture of Dagestan in 1971-73 and was re-elected the first secretary of Derbend Region in 1973. He presided over the Council of Deputies of Derbend Region in 1991-98 and worked as an adviser to the president of Dagestan from 1998 until his retirement in 2005. Said Gurbanov was a member of Council of Doyens under the president of Dagestan. He was elected to the parliament and then to the State Council of Dagestan Republic. Authorities of Dagestan republic issued a necrology on the occasion of Said Gurbanov’s death on Friday. Said Gurbanov was an outstanding state figure and played special role in the relations between Azerbaijan and Dagestan, the necrology said. President of Dagestan Mukhu Aliyev, chairman of the People’s Majlis Mahammad Suleymanov, prime minister Shamil Zeynalov, members of Dagestan government and heads of regional and municipal administrations signed the necrology.
