The closure of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) will lead to an increase in Armenia’s energy dependence on other countries, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, APA reports.

According to her, the Metsamor NPP currently plays a key role in Armenia’s energy balance, providing approximately 30% of the electricity generated in the country.

“The stable production of affordable electricity has for many years enabled Armenia to develop its industry and ensure technological progress,” Zakharova said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson noted that peaceful nuclear energy remains one of the factors of sovereignty and energy security, particularly against the backdrop of what she described as the unsuccessful experience of a number of European countries in transitioning to renewable energy sources.

“Closing the country’s own nuclear power plant will lead to nothing but increased dependence on other states in the energy sector,” Zakharova stressed.
