Baku. Vahab Rzayev - APA-Economics. U.S. stock indexes recovered a portion of the previous session’s losses Wednesday, boosted by news a federal stimulus package was on the way.
Lawmakers in Washington agreed on a $789.5 billion package that promises to provide jobs for struggling Americans. Details on the deal weren’t immediately released but the size of the bill appeared to boost investors’ confidence.
By close, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.64 percent, 50.65 points, to 7,939.53. The Standard & Poor’s 500 rose 0.8 percent, 6.58 points, to 833.74. The Nasdaq composite index gained 5.77 points, 0.38 percent, to 1,530.50.
On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,794 stocks advanced and 1,224 declined on a volume of 8.2 billion shares traded.
The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury bond rose 12/32 to yield 2.762 percent.
The euro rose to $1.2899, compared to Tuesday’s $1.2894. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar held even Wednesday at 90.40 yen.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei average dropped 23.09 points, 0.29 percent, to 7,945.94.
In London, the FTSE 100 index rose 0.5 percent, 21.18 points, to 4,234.26.
