At a press conference during the second day of a NATO summit in Warsaw, Stoltenberg said: “We agreed to sustain our Resolute Support mission beyond 2016. Additional planning will be conducted in the coming months to define our presence in 2017.”

NATO country leaders also agreed to provide financial support for the armed forces and police in Afghanistan until 2020, but expect the country to implement reforms, Stoltenberg said.

He added that NATO “will continue to support Afghanistan but we expect [they] will continue to step up efforts to fight corruption and implement reforms.”

The NATO-led Resolute Support mission, consisting of over 12,000 troops, was launched on 1 January 2015 to provide training, advice and assistance for the Afghan security forces and institutions.
