The tragedy occurred in the village of Shorik, not far from the town of Khoy. The explosion is said to have been caused by a gas leak from a water heating system, which resulted in the powerful explosion, followed by a massive fire.
The injured were hospitalized with burns of varying severity in hospitals situated in Tabriz, Urmia, Isfahan, and Tehran.
Iran’s Tasnim agency said the more people were affected because firefighters were too late to arrive at the site and also because there was lack of relevant departments in medical facilities in Khoy.
