Baku-APA. The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has welcomed the decision of the country 's General National Congress (GNC) to form a constituent assembly for drafting the new Libyan constitution, UN Spokesperson Martin Nesirky told reporters here Wednesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Libya Tarek Mitri called this decision "an important milestone that will pave the way for continued progress toward a constitution that reflects the needs, priorities and aspirations of the Libyan people," according to Nesirky.
The special envoy to the country also said that "the UN Mission stands ready to assist the Libyan authorities throughout the electoral process."
Established by the UN Security Council in September 2011, UNSMIL is a political mission to support Libya's new transitional authorities in their post-conflict efforts.
Libya's GNC held a vote on the subject on Wednesday, which resulted in 87 members in favor and 10 others against. It will also form a body to reform the High Electoral Commission within a couple of days.
