Baku-APA. A Spanish soldier was killed on Friday in an explosion of an "improvised explosive devise" in Afghanistan, the Spanish Ministry of Defense confirmed, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Sergeant David Fernandez Urena, 35, was defusing a bomb located near towns of Qala-i-Naw and Darra-i-Bun when it or another bomb exploded.

He is the 101st Spanish soldier to die in Afghanistan since the country took part in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) there in 2002.

Spain has about 1,400 troops in Afghanistan. They are due to be withdrawn by the end of 2014.

Spanish deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria has offered the government's condolences, expressing "solidarity and the recognition of the generous efforts" of the armed forces in the "occasionally dangerous and always difficult" task they faced.
