Baku – APA. Witnesses say at least one demonstrator was killed in Oman on Friday as security forces fired water cannons and used tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters in the northern part of the country, APA reports quoting “The Voice of America”.
Clashes broke out after Friday prayers in the industrial, port town of Sohar, where anti-government protests first erupted in late February. Western news reports say a protester was killed in the clashes,
The demonstrations on Friday called for the release of protesters being detained.
On Tuesday, the Omani army cleared the same roundabout in Sohar, where a small group of demonstrators were holding a sit-in. Security forces arrested several people linked to the protests.
Over the last month, Omanis have staged a series of demonstrations where they have rallied for economic reforms and a greater role in politics.
Sultan Qaboos bin Sa’id has announced a series of reforms in response to the protesters’ demands. Earlier this month, he issued a decree granting lawmaking powers to councils that previously had only advisory roles.
He also ordered an increase in state pension benefits and payments for families receiving social security.
