Baku-APA. Retaliating against mortar shell-firing by Gaza militants, Israeli tanks made an incursion into the Palestinian territory on Tuesday, resulting in the death of one person and injury to two others, APA reports quoting rttnews.com website
Armored vehicles and bulldozers moved 200 meters across the border and opened fire near the northern town of Jabaliya, east of Beit Hanoun, reports said.
Gaza militant outfit Hamas says the young victim was collecting stones when he came under fire.
Israeli military did not comment on the reports. It had stepped up resistance to frequent shelling of Israeli targets in recent months.
Last week, Israeli Defense Force had issued a statement holding "the Hamas terrorist organization solely responsible for maintaining the calm in the Gaza Strip and for any terrorist activity emanating from it."
It warned of "harsh response to any attempt to use terror against the State of Israel."
The intermittent rocket attacks were in violation of a decision by militant outfits in the Gaza Strip which agreed late last month to end cross-border rocket attacks, a key condition set by Israel to end its blockade of the coastal strip in peril.
