Baku – APA. Baghdad appointed its ambassador to Kuwait in the first such move since the 1990 Iraqi invasion to the country, the country’s deputy foreign minister told an Iraqi TV channel, APA reports citing RÄ°A Novosti.

Iraq has had an embassy and a charge d’affaires in Kuwait since the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003, but it has not sent an ambassador there since the 1990 invasion. Kuwait, however, appointed its ambassador to Iraq about a year ago.

"Iraq appointed Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Ulum its first ambassador to Kuwait since 1990," Mohammed Haj Mahmoud said.

Relations between the two states remain strained mainly over Iraq’s debt of $60 billion.
