Yamandu Orsi, a member of the left-wing Broad Front coalition, has been sworn in as president of Uruguay, with the ceremony taking place at the parliament building, APA reports citing TASS.
"We will build a better Uruguay. And we will start today," Orsi said during his first speech as the head of state, which was broadcast on the YouTube channel of the presidential administration.
Uruguay's new leader promised to implement measures to combat child poverty and strengthen the agricultural sector. He also reiterated that one of his priorities would be the fight against crime, the rate of which has risen in Uruguay in recent years.
The ceremony was attended by the presidents of Bolivia, Brazil, Germany, Colombia, and Chile, as well as the King of Spain.
