Baku-APA. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Monday praised the agreement the Syrian opposition reached in Doha as "an important step forward", APA reports quoting Xinhua
At a meeting of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Prague, Rasmussen said the situation in Syria could be addressed by a political solution and that NATO was not going to intervene in Syria as it did in Libya because neither the states in the region nor the opposition are calling for such action.
He added, however, that NATO "will do what it takes to protect and defend Turkey, our ally."
Border military incidents by Syria have led Turkey to reinforce the protection of its border and has asked NATO for the patriot anti-missile system for this purpose.
