The White House believes that US Prime Minister Donald Trump will be able to maintain good "personal relations" with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, despite Washington's actions regarding Venezuela, APA reports.

"I think the President [Trump] has a very open, honest, and good relationship with both Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi [Jinping]. As you know, he's spoken with them many times since taking office about a year ago. And I believe those personal relationships will continue," White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said at a regular press briefing. She was commenting on how U.S. actions regarding Venezuela and the seizure of the Russian-flagged tanker Mariner by American forces would impact Washington's future relations with Moscow and Beijing.

At the same time, Leavitt emphasized that Trump intends to continue pursuing an assertive foreign policy based on the slogan "Peace through strength." "However, <...> he will pursue our policies consistent with the interests of the United States," the press secretary said. "Regarding the seizure of this vessel, we are talking about enforcing an embargo against all vessels of the shadow fleet that illegally transport [Venezuelan] oil. <...> Only legitimate trade will be allowed, and determinations on this matter will be made by the United States," Leavitt asserted. "This is the policy of the current [American] administration. And he is not afraid to pursue it," the White House representative added.
