The United States has significantly increased the number of military aircraft stationed at bases in Jordan and Saudi Arabia, APA reports citing British newspaper Financial Times (FT) .
The newspaper estimates that Washington is "gathering massive air power in the Middle East for a possible military campaign against Iran that could last several weeks."
Citing satellite imagery and an assessment by Tel Aviv University, the publication reports that at least 66 fighter jets are stationed at the Jordanian base. Eighteen of the aircraft visible in the images are F-35 fighters, according to an aviation expert. The base also houses 17 F-15 multirole fighters and eight A-10 attack aircraft, the article states. The newspaper also notes that EA-18 electronic warfare aircraft and transport aircraft have also been spotted at the base.
After analyzing the images, the aviation expert also reported the presence of E-3 AWACS airborne early warning and control aircraft and C-130 and C-5 transport aircraft at a base in Saudi Arabia. The number of aircraft there has also increased, the Financial Times reports.
In January, the White House warned that it was seriously considering the use of force against the Islamic Republic. Washington then expressed hope that Tehran would sit down at the negotiating table and reach a "fair and equitable" deal that would entail the complete abolition of nuclear weapons. Iranian authorities have repeatedly stated that they have no intention of developing a nuclear bomb.
