US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that Chinese President Xi Jinping will not resort to military action against Taiwan while he is in office. He said it in an interview with The New York Times, APA reports.
Commenting on the newspaper's assertions that Beijing views Taiwan as a "separatist threat," Trump said: "It's his business what he's going to do. But, you know, I've made it clear to him that I would be very unhappy if he did that, and I don't think he would take that step. I hope not."
When asked by a reporter whether the Chinese leader might take advantage of current events to attack or blockade the island, the US president responded bluntly. "He might do that when we have a different president, but I don't think he's going to do that while I'm president," Trump said.
