Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters at the Capitol that the U.S. has "tremendous leverage" over Venezuela and will control the proceeds from the sale of millions of barrels of oil to help stabilize the country, APA reports citing CBS News.
"We are going to take between 30 and 50 million barrels of oil. We're going to sell it in the marketplace at market rates, not at the discounts Venezuela was getting," Rubio said after a briefing for senators by senior administration officials. "That money will then be handled in such a way that we will control how it is disbursed in a way that benefits the Venezuelan people, not corruption, not the regime, so we have a lot of leverage to move on the stabilization front."
Rubio said the administration's recent efforts to "quarantine" Venezuelan oil have given the U.S. the "strongest leverage possible" to dictate next steps in the country. He said the administration is taking a three-step approach to handling the aftermath of the Maduro raid: stability, recovery and reconciliation.
"We don't want it descending into chaos," Rubio said.
