Multiple victims in shooting at Seattle Center, police say

Multiple people have been shot at the Seattle Center near the city’s landmark Space Needle, police say.

The shooting occurred at about 18:00 local time on Sunday while the venue was hosting the annual Bite of Seattle food festival, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Images shared on social media showed a large police and emergency services presence, with officers in tactical gear deployed at the scene. Videos appeared to show crowds fleeing after gunshots were heard and people taking shelter inside the Space Needle’s lobby.

Witness Nick Bate told KIRO-TV that he initially thought the sounds were fireworks before crowds began running past him.

Another witness, Leanne Coles, described the scene as “really scary”, saying she fled with the crowd and ducked for cover.

Authorities have asked people to avoid the area. The number and condition of the victims remain unclear, and police have not said whether anyone has been arrested.

The Seattle Center Monorail was closed for the rest of Sunday and is expected to reopen on Monday morning.
