Baku-APA. About 40 passengers were injured Wednesday when two subway trains collided in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The collision occurred at 10 am local time (1300 GMT) between the stations of Vila Carrao and Penha, both on Line 3 of Sao Paulo ’s underground transportation network. Line 3, an east-west link and with 18 stops, is one of the system’s most heavily used lines, carrying nearly a million commuters a day.

The Fire Department said the trains collided along a segment of the track that runs above ground, allowing most of the passengers to exit the cars without the help of rescue workers.

Two of the injured were in serious condition and taken to hospital, having suffered loss of blood and possible head trauma, but most had only minor cuts and bruises, the department said.

Thanks to the fact that both trains were advancing at a fairly low speed when they crashed, there were no immediate fatalities, said Fire Department Captain Ricardo Peixoto.

Further investigation over the cause of the accident is underway.
