UN chief congratulates French president-elect

Baku-APA. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Tuesday congratulated Francois Hollande for his victory in the second round of the French presidential elections, which took place on Sunday, Ban’s spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters here, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"The secretary-general wishes Mr. Hollande every success and looks forward to working together with him on a variety of issues of interest to France and the United Nations," Nesirky said in a statement issued here.

The secretary-general will address a letter to the president- elect shortly, congratulating him on his victory and wishing him success in the implementation of his mandate, the statement said.

Hollande won 51.7 percent of the total votes in the second round of elections, defeating the current French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, reports said.

"The secretary-general has greatly appreciated the excellent cooperation he has enjoyed these past five years with President Sarkozy," the statement said.

Hollande will be sworn in on May 15, said the reports.
