Obama congratulates new Japanese leader

Baku-APA. President Barack Obama has telephoned Naoto Kan to congratulate him on being named Japan’s new prime minister, APA reports quoting news.yahoo.com website.
A White House statement said the two believe in a strong U.S.-Japan alliance, and they agreed during their call Saturday to work together closely on challenges including those posed by Iran and North Korea.
Kan is Japan’s sixth prime minister in four years. He was named to the post Friday, two days after Yukio Hatoyama stepped down amid plunging approval ratings over broken campaign promises and a political funding scandal.
The statement said the Obama and Kan look forward to meeting each other later this month at a meeting in Canada of the leading industrial nations.
