Baku-APA. US President Barack Obama has called German Chancellor Angela Merkel to congratulate her on Berlin’s plan to contribute to a fund to stabilize the European economy, APA reports quoting presstv.ir web-page.

In a 10-minute telephone call, Obama congratulated Merkel on the German parliament’s vote on Friday to approve Germany’s share of a trillion-dollar emergency rescue package to protect debt-stricken European Union members, the White House said.

Berlin is to provide up to around 150 billion euros (188 billion dollars) of the 750-billion-euro (938-billion-dollar) "shock and awe" emergency package of loan guarantees.

Merkel applauded the US Senate’s passage this week of the most sweeping financial reforms in decades.

Democrats in both houses of Congress have pledged to put a final version of the rules on Obama’s desk within weeks.

A White House spokesman also said that the leaders discussed Iran’s nuclear program and other issues in advance of the G-20 summit next month in Canada.

Obama called Merkel on Saturday after he gave the graduation address at the US Military Academy in West Point, New York.
