Baku-APA. U.S. President Barack Obama visited the headquarters of New York Police Department (NYPD) Thursday afternoon to thank the law enforcement agents who responded to the attempted Times Square car bombing, APA reports quoting Xinhua News Agency.
"The country is proud of you, I know the mayor and the (police)commissioner are proud of you. The president is proud of you," a news pool report cites Obama as saying during this unannounced stop to the NYPD.
Obama praised the patrol officers and mounted police officers who dealt with an explosives-filled SUV in Times Square on May 1.
Joining New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly in the NYPD command center, Obama said the NYPD did a "model" job in locating and arresting Faisal Shahzad, the Connecticut man responsible for parking the vehicle.
During the president’s meeting with the NYPD, police inspected a suspicious-looking car near the NYPD headquarters building in downtown Manhattan, but determined it contained nothing dangerous.
The visit came hours after U.S. FBI agents arrested three people in connection with the failed car bombing in Times Square.
Before arriving in the city, Obama visited Buffalo to discuss the economic situation with workers at a manufacturing company.
