Baku-APA. Former New York state leader Joseph Bruno on Thursday was sentenced to two years in prison and three years’ probation for two counts of fraud, APA reports citing Xinhua News Agency.

The 81-year-old Bruno, once one of the most powerful political figures in New York and served as the Republican leader of the state Senate for 13 years, was convicted last year of using his office to steer contracts and grants to businesses that paid him at least 3 million dollars.

Prosecutors had wanted Bruno to serve for eight years in federal prison, while the judge said that the defense lawyers’ request for just probation was lenient of a sentence.

Bruno has agreed to pay 280,000 dollars in restitution.
