Baku-APA. U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday discussed Middle East peace talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said the White House, APA reports citing news.xinhuanet.com website.
"They discussed how best to work together to achieve comprehensive peace in the Middle East, in particular by making full use of substantive proximity talks between Israel and the Palestinians and transitioning to direct negotiations as soon as possible," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters in a regular briefing.
Gibbs said Obama reaffirmed his unshakable commitment to Israel ’s security during the phone call.
The proximity talks, also known as the indirect talks, was stalled when Israel announced plans to build 1,600 houses in a disputed area in East Jerusalem in March.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday that indirect talks between Israelis and Palestinians will resume within a week.
