Egyptian court sentences 14 Islamists to death over attack charge

Baku-APA. An Egyptian court sentenced 14 Islamists to death over the charge of carrying attacks on the security forces in Sinai Peninsula last year, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The court, which held its urgent session in the city of Ismailia, also ordered another four Islamists, who belong to the hard-line Islamist group Al-Tawhidwa al-Jihad, to life sentence.

The country’s top cleric had approved the sentences.

About 25 persons were charged of assaulting police and security officers guarding Arish police station and Alexandria Bank branch in June, 2011. During the incidents, seven were killed, including one civilian, and 16 policemen injured.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian armed forces have intensified their existence in Sinai, following the deadly Aug. 5 attack on the checkpoint in Rafah which left 16 soldiers killed and seven injured.
