Baku-APA. At least nine people were killed and 17 severely hurt when a light truck they were traveling in overturned in Mwense district in Zambia’s Luapula Province on Sunday, a police spokesperson said on Monday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Zambia Police Spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela said the accident happened when a light truck, which was carrying 31 people believed to be members of a local church, had a tyre burst, causing it to lose control and hit a tree.

The accident happened on Sunday around 9 p.m. local time, she said in a statement emailed to Xinhua.

All the injured are admitted at a local hospital, she added.

Meanwhile, the police spokesperson has said the country recorded six road traffic accidents over the weekend in which 16 people died.

Road traffic accidents are common in Zambia and are usually caused by careless driving due to porous system of obtaining drivers’ licenses and the poor state of roads.
