Baku. Ulkar Gasimova – APA. “Compared with 2007 the number of incoming tourists increased in 2008. Despite the world financial crisis, increase of tourists is good. This is connected with the development in Azerbaijan and especially in the capital,” Culture and Tourism Minister Abulfas Garayev told journalists, APA reports. The minister said that 1 193 742 foreigners (903 889 tourists) came to Azerbaijan in 2006, 1 332 701 foreigners (1 010 792 tourists) came in 2007 and 1 898 939 foreigners (1 408 908 tourists) came to Azerbaijan in 2008. Last year the number of tourists increased by 39.4 percent due to Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Iran, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Germany, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, India and other countries. The minister said the number of tourists might be reduced by 15-18 percent because of financial crisis. Abulfas Garayev said it was planned to increase the number of incoming tourists by 5-6 million within 5-6 years.
