“Today is observed around the world as World Environment Day. This date once again reminds us of environmental problems in the South Caucasus, particularly the situation related to transboundary rivers. We have documented with facts the damage caused by Armenia’s mining industry activities to the environment of Azerbaijan and the South Caucasus as a whole, and have also prepared a separate cartographic work on this issue,” stated Amin Mammadov, co-founder of the “Environmental Protection First” Coalition, APA reports.
He said that Armenia’s compliance with the obligations arising from the Espoo Convention, to which it is a party, should also be viewed as part of the peace agenda: “We call on the United Nations, the European Union, and other relevant international organizations to pay special attention to regional environmental initiatives of civil society and to the environmental condition of the transboundary rivers between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
Amin Mammadov also recalled that the Araz River is a transboundary river with Iran, and in this regard, Iran’s accession to the Espoo Convention would be desirable, as the consequences of pollution in the Araz River cause serious damage to Azerbaijan as a downstream country, as well as to the Caspian Sea and the region.
