Baku - APA-Economics. Unemployment in the UK rose by 118,000 to another 17-year high of 2.68m in the three months to November, the Office for National Statistics said.

The jobless rate increased more rapidly than expected to 8.4 per cent of the workforce, up 0.3 percentage points on the previous quarter and the highest since 1996. Economists had predicted 8.3 per cent.

There were some signs that the rate of deterioration in the labour market may be slowing down. The number claiming jobseeker’s allowance rose by 1,200 in December to 1.6m, less than the increase of 10,000 predicted. Employment rose for the first time in five months, by 18,000 to 29.12m. Part-timers increased by 75,000 but full-time employment dropped by 57,000. Slight falls were seen in Northern Ireland, London, south-west England and Wales.
